It is that time of the year to start planning for the next up and coming duck hunting season. Plan ahead so when it comes time it will just be a matter of packing up and trucking off down the road.
Go through all of your hunting gear to make sure you have everything you figure you are going to need. If you want to add to your gear, maybe a few more decoys or a new blind you will have time to plan it and afford it. The money for additions doesn’t have to come all at once. Budgeting for things can really make your trip more relaxed and fun.

Chesapeake Bay , Maryland – The country’s Largest estuary- They hunt a whole range of ducks. Diver Ducks, Puddle Ducks, Sea ducks, a virtual Duck hunting paradise. Also including snow geese and Atlantic Brant which will diversify any hunt you plan.
Venice, Louisiana – Full of rivers and marshes home to over nine million different species of waterfowl. You have your choice of ducks including pintail , canvasbacks, widgeon’s just to name a few. It sits at the end of the central flyway.
Stuttgart, Arkansas – Flooded timbers and rice fields makes it an absolute gem for hunting ducks. It is a Mallard haven bu you can also find other species such as green-winged, wigeon’s, pintails, shovlers and an incredible amount of others. Arkansas is ranked in the top 3 states for total duck harvest.
St. Paul Island, Alaska- This is and island in the middle of the Bering Straight and is the home to Pacific Waterfowl. The main duck that is hunted is the King Eider which is very abundant but one of the most difficult to hunt. Other ducks in this location include Pacific Eiders and other Sea Ducks.
San Francisco Bay, California- You have over 10,000 acres of tidal waters and salt ponds in its National Wildlife Refuge area. This gives you access to mallards, dabblers and divers. One of the largest population of waterfowl. Throughout the year you can see over 32 species. In most years, the bay winters the majority of the Pacific Flyway migration.
Salt Lake City, Utah- One of the favorite duck hunting location’s. Salt Lake is a very important waterfowl habitat in the western mountain region. There are 35 waterfowl species which constitutes between 3 and 4 million birds per year. They use the diverse wetland ecosystem for migration and breeding. The Great Salt Lake is of particular importance for Northern Pintails, Cinnamon Teal, Gadwall, Green-winged Teal, Tundra Swans, Redheads, Ruddy Ducks, Common Goldeneyes, Mallards, and Canada Geese (the Rocky Mountain Population).
Seattle, Washington- Seattle provides a vast variety of landscapes for the waterfowl. They range from corn ponds to open water. Types of waterfowl that habitats this area are Puddle Ducks, Diving Ducks, Sea Ducks and Geese (including Brant). They typically rant second amoung the 12 western states in waterfowl abundance , hunter numbers and harvest.
Charleston, South Carolina- One of the area’s they say you have to put in a little work to reap the rewards. Once you have put in the effort it is one of the most rewarding experience. They hunt on the Ashepoo, Combahee and Ediston rivers that are located near by. The birds that you will be hunting are ringnecks, gadwalls, mallards and green-winged teal. Goose hunters also can have a fin time taking around 37,000 a year. So again something for everyone.
St. Louis, Missouri – 40 % of all waterfowl migrate over and around St.Louis. So that makes it one of the best duck hunting places around. You can hunt in flooded area’s, sheet water, rice fields and soybean fields. Millions of ducks and geese. Mallards, Pintail, Widgeon, Gadwall, Teal, Scaup, Redheads, even the occasional Canvasback, and Black Duck.
Russell, Kansas- They have over 200,000 acre’s of natural habitat. Millions of waterfowl travel through this area every year. Kansas is located in the Central Flyway for ducks and geese. Bag limits – Six ducks including no more than, 5 mallards, of which only 2 may be hens; 3 wood ducks; 3 scaup; 2 pintails; 2 redheads; and 2 canvasbacks. Possession limit is three times the daily bag limit.
